Personal Locator Beacons (PLBs)

When using a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB), activated by flipping a switch to transmit a distress signal, the device communicates with a global satellite system monitored by NOAA in the U.S. This signal is then relayed to response agencies and local search and rescue organizations to initiate assistance. PLBs provide GPS coordinates to pinpoint your location accurately and can include strobe lights for better visibility. To enhance response times, registering your PLB in the NOAA SARSAT database with personal information is essential, and updating this data every two years is necessary. PLBs come with long-lasting lithium batteries, capable of transmitting for over 24 hours in extreme cold conditions, and up to 30 hours in milder settings. While battery replacements can be costly and require dealer servicing, some manufacturers offer free unit replacements after activation for a life-saving rescue.
