Frequently Asked Questions
OSAT works with our sister company, Outfitter Satellite, to fulfil our US rental orders. Once you've selected the equipment you want on OSAT, you'll be directed to Outfitter to complete the rental contract and provide the information needed to prepare your order. Outfitter then processes payment, prepares the equipment and ships the rental to you.
Once your completed contract is received, the Outfitter Satellite team reviews your rental dates, contact and shipping details, any selected extras and the equipment you've requested. From there, they prepare the correct rental kit, process payment and arrange shipment for your rental period.
Start with what you actually need to do.
If you need to speak to someone directly, an Iridium satellite phone is usually the simplest choice. If you mainly want messaging, tracking and SOS in a very small device, consider the Garmin inReach Mini 2. If several people want to use their own phones or tablets for satellite voice, messaging and light data, an Iridium GO! or GO! exec may be a better fit.
If you're still unsure, contact us before ordering. It's much easier to choose the right equipment based on your destination and communication needs than simply picking the most expensive option.
That depends on the device and rental package. Satellite phones, Garmin communicators and Iridium hotspots all use different service structures, so don't assume that every rental includes unlimited usage.
Check the individual rental page before ordering so you know exactly what is included and what additional usage may cost. Some satellite phone rental options include airtime allowances or allow usage to be billed according to the selected plan.
Yes. The rental contract gives you the opportunity to provide the shipping and contact information needed for your order, including additional address details where applicable. This can be useful if you need the equipment sent to an office, hotel, project location or another address before your trip.
Just make sure the address you provide is somewhere the package can be received securely.
Earlier is always better, particularly if you're travelling during a busy period or need several devices. OSAT recommends booking at least around a week in advance where possible, even though faster delivery may sometimes be available.
Giving yourself extra time also means you can receive the equipment before departure, familiarize yourself with it and make sure you understand how to use it before you're somewhere without cell service.
Not automatically. Satellite equipment doesn't need a nearby cell tower, but the device still needs access to its satellite network and a sufficiently clear view of the sky.
Buildings, metal roofs, dense tree cover, steep canyon walls and other obstructions can interfere with satellite connectivity. Coverage also depends on the network and device you're using. Iridium provides global coverage, while other satellite networks may cover specific regions instead.
Absolutely.
Don't make the first time you switch on a satellite device the moment you actually need it. Once the rental arrives, familiarize yourself with the controls, charging accessories and antenna position, and understand how to make a call, send a message or use the relevant app.
Even a few minutes of practice before departure can make using the equipment much easier once you're in the field.
Yes. Satellite rentals aren't limited to individual travellers. Multiple devices can be useful for expeditions, remote work crews, events, offshore teams and projects where people are operating across different locations.
If you need a larger quantity, it's worth contacting the team before placing individual orders so the equipment, rental dates and shipping requirements can be coordinated properly.
Renting generally makes the most sense when you only need satellite communications for a specific trip, project or short period of time. You get access to the equipment while you need it without purchasing hardware that may spend most of the year sitting unused.
If you're regularly travelling or working beyond cellular coverage, purchasing may become more economical in the long run. OSAT offers both rental and purchase options, so the best choice really comes down to how frequently you expect to use the equipment.
