Frequently Asked Questions
Not quite. Devices such as the Iridium GO! and GO! exec create a Wi-Fi connection for your phone, tablet, or laptop, but the internet connection itself is delivered over the Iridium satellite network. They’re designed primarily for essential communications rather than high-bandwidth internet use. Think messaging, email, weather information, voice calls, and selected apps rather than streaming movies or replacing your home broadband.
The original Iridium GO! is best suited to straightforward satellite communications such as voice calls, SMS, GPS location sharing, SOS, and weather services through compatible apps. The GO! exec is the more capable option, using Iridium Certus 100 and supporting smartphones, tablets, and laptops with services including email, messaging apps, weather applications, and voice calling.
With the Iridium GO! exec, selected messaging services such as WhatsApp, Signal, Telegram, WeChat, LINE, and Viber are supported. Because satellite data is very different from a regular cellular connection, it’s still best to keep messages lightweight and avoid automatically downloading large photos, videos, or files.
Yes. These devices are designed to let multiple users connect their smart devices over Wi-Fi. The original Iridium GO!, for example, can connect up to five devices wirelessly, making it useful for families, crews, or small teams who need to share a single satellite connection.
Yes. Instead of making the call directly from a traditional satellite handset, compatible smartphones can connect to the hotspot over Wi-Fi and make satellite voice calls using the relevant Iridium app. The GO! exec also includes its own speaker and microphone for voice calling directly from the unit.
The satellite side of the connection still needs good visibility of the sky. Heavy roofs, buildings, mountains, or other obstructions can interfere with the signal, so the unit generally performs best when positioned somewhere with an open view above it. Your phone or laptop can then connect to the hotspot over its local Wi-Fi signal.
These aren’t really designed for that. Iridium hotspots are much better suited to essential, lower-data communications than bandwidth-heavy activities such as Netflix, YouTube, large file transfers, or video conferencing. If your priority is conventional high-speed internet for streaming or working online, a service such as Starlink would normally be the better fit.
Renting makes sense when you only need satellite connectivity for a specific trip, temporary job, offshore passage, emergency plan, or short-term deployment. You get the equipment for the period you actually need it without committing to purchasing hardware that may spend most of the year sitting unused.
