Documents, key specifications and FAQs for the inReach Mini 2 plus the Mini 3 range, built for two-way messaging, tracking and SOS beyond cellular coverage.

Overview

What does the inReach Mini range do?

The inReach Mini family is designed for off-grid comms. You can send and receive messages, share your location, and trigger an interactive SOS using the Iridium satellite network. For easier typing and contact management, pair the device with the Garmin Messenger app.

Messaging

Two-way updates from anywhere

Message contacts when you are away from mobile coverage, including preset check-ins for quick “all good” updates.

Tracking

Share progress and location

Use tracking and live sharing to keep others informed, with regular points and a last known position if needed.

Safety

SOS with two-way coordination

Trigger SOS to send your location and open a message thread so responders can confirm details and coordinate help.

inReach airtime and subscriptions

Your inReach needs an active satellite plan for messaging, tracking and SOS. If you are ready to activate, start here.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Fast answers for setup, subscriptions, messaging, tracking and SOS.

Do I need a subscription to use inReach features?

Yes. Two-way messaging, tracking and SOS require an active satellite plan.

Can I type messages on my phone instead of the device?

Yes. Pair with the Garmin Messenger app to use your phone keyboard, while the inReach handles the satellite connection.

What is the difference between Mini 2 and the Mini 3 range?

Mini 2 is a proven, button-led device. The Mini 3 series refreshes the experience with an updated interface while keeping core capabilities: messaging, tracking and SOS.

How does SOS work?

Triggering SOS sends your location via satellite and opens an interactive message thread so responders can confirm details and coordinate assistance. Keep the device on with a clear view of the sky where possible.

Do preset messages count toward my allowance?

Many plans allow preset check-ins that do not count toward your monthly message allowance. Plan behaviour varies by tier.

Is the inReach Mini waterproof?

These devices are built for outdoor use. For best longevity, rinse and dry after saltwater exposure and keep ports clean.

Which plan should I choose?

Pick a plan based on how often you message and how frequently you track. Light use can fit a smaller allowance, regular messaging and frequent tracking generally suit a higher tier.
